Everchanging Concrete Jungle: Revolution
A downloadable game for Windows
A school gamejam game, made over the time period of 48 hours with a team of 3. Everchanging Concrete Jungle: Revolution is a 2-4 player party platformer game, where the players get to create the level themselves before playing it from start to finish. Designed to be played with xbox 360 controllers.
The topic for the gamejam was Concrete. Due to this, the game takes place in a concrete jungle, hence the name.
About the gameplay (also available in How to Play within the game, so feel free to skip the rest):
The game is divided into 4 parts: start, build mode, trap mode and play mode. At the start, the map is empty, with only a few pre-placed traps, a start point and an exit. During this phase, all available players will join the game by pressing the action key (default A on an xbox 360 controller, space on keyboard). After the first person has chosen to join, a 20 second timer will start before the game begins, after which no more players will be able to join. This timer is reduced down to 3 seconds after all 4 people have entered. Following this, the game shifts to build mode.
In build mode, all the players who joined will be able to move their cursor around a grid that is only visible in build mode. Pressing the action key, they will be able to create walkable blocks, lighter in color than the ones around the map. These blocks can be removed by any player by attempting to place another block on top of them. Each player can place or remove a total of 80 blocks. Build mode has a timer of 20 seconds before automatically proceeding to the next phase, the trap mode. This happens regardless of how many blocks the players placed or didn't place.
Trap mode is almost identical to build mode, except this time, the players will place the traps for the level they created instead of the blocks that they can move on. On top of this, each player only gets 4 traps to place. The trap placed is chosen at random, and can be a spinning wrecking ball, an upwards spike or a cannon that fires either left or right. Traps can be placed on top of the blocks placed in building mode or on empty tiles. Trying to place a trap on top of another trap will remove said trap while also using one of your trap blocks, so choose your placements wisely. After another 20 seconds have passed, the game moves to the final phase, the play mod
In play mode, the players get to compete against eachother in the level they created together. The player character controls like any other platformer game, where you can move left, right and jump. On top of this, the game includes the ability to wall jump, by rubbing yourself against a wall and then jumping. This can be chained to gain height as much as is needed. If the player touches a trap, they will immediately be moved back to the spawn point and must attempt the level all over again. The game is finished after either all players have reached the exit, or 60 seconds have passed.
Once the game is finished, the game goes back to phase 1. The map is not reset after the play mode is finished, so you get to continue working on the map all over again.
Changes made after the gamejam:
-Added player 0 for those who do not have a controller to use at home.
-Slightly tweaked the jumping mechanic to be more responsive.
-Changed how to play to fit these changes.
Controls are available within "How to Play" ingame.
